What Is a Skort? And Why Is It So Good for Racket Sports?
If you’ve found yourself wondering exactly what a skort is, the answer is pleasingly simple.
It’s a skirt with shorts built in underneath.
Skirt + shorts = skort.
Simple name. Very useful piece of clothing.
Why wear a skort?
You get the look and movement of a skirt, but with the comfort and coverage of shorts underneath.
That’s particularly useful when you’re playing sport. You can run, serve, stretch, lunge and generally throw yourself around the court without having to think too much about what your skirt is doing.
And that’s exactly the point.
Good sportswear should be something you put on and then forget about.
Why are skorts so popular for racket sports?
Skorts and racket sports are a very good match.
Sports like tennis, padel, pickleball and squash involve lots of quick movement and changes of direction. Built-in shorts give you coverage while the skirt layer keeps that classic court look.
They’re also incredibly easy to wear.
Pair one with a vest or sports top when you’re playing, throw on a sweatshirt afterwards and you don’t necessarily need to change just because you’ve left the court.
Is a skort the same as a tennis skirt?
Not necessarily.
A traditional tennis skirt is simply a skirt, although lots of modern products sold as tennis skirts now have shorts built underneath.
A skort specifically combines the two in one garment.

What should you look for in a sports skort?
Fit is a big one.
You want enough stretch to move comfortably and a waistband that feels secure without digging in. The shorts underneath should also be comfortable enough that you’re not constantly pulling them back into place.
Length is personal. Some people love a very short tennis skirt, while others prefer a little more coverage.
And then there’s how it looks.
We think that bit matters too.
Sportswear can be practical and still be something you really want to wear.
Can you wear a skort off the court?
Absolutely.
In fact, that was important to us when creating Rally Rally.
A sports skort with trainers, a T-shirt, vest, sweatshirt or knit can work just as well away from the court.
Play in it. Go for lunch in it. Walk the dog in it. Take it on holiday.
A skort doesn’t have to be something you only pull out when you’ve booked a court.
